Energizing Morning Routine – 8 Simple Things You Can Start Doing First Thing Tomorrow!

Are you tired of feeling tired? Do you lack the energy you need throughout the day to stay focused and alert? Maybe what you are lacking is an energizing morning routine that can start your morning off right!

Morning Routine – own it!

This list of 8 energizing activities I do each morning to help me start the day off right is just a suggestion! You can modify and come up with your own ideas and experiment to see what works the best for you. We all have individual needs, struggles and passions, so have fun with this list and make it your own!

But first…

Why Morning and Why Do I Need a Consistent Routine?

For quite a few years now, I have lacked a healthy, consistent morning routine…I would often stay up late watching Netflix or listening to podcasts and I found it hard to wind down and fall asleep quickly.

Since being at home with my kids and sleep deprived from night time feedings, I rarely set an alarm. And only manged to roll myself out of bed when the first child awake would start hollering.

It would take what felt like hours to properly wake up and get organized for the day ahead and by then I would hit the afternoon slump of exhaustion.

When I feel tired I’m grumpy, and when I’m feeling disorganized and unprepared for the day I only get more irratable and overwhelmed. Which leads to more grumpiness and lack of motivation.

Set a Goal

One of my favourite things to do is read. I love “the escape” into a story or another person’s journey. But I was finding that I was lacking the time and excitement I once felt setting aside the space and time to read.

So I did what many people do when ringing in the New Year, made a resolution. “I am going to read 52 books in 2018.”

I set a goal for myself. And now I was going to have to figure out how I was going to accomplish that goal!

The only way I could see myself having the time and energy to read 52 books this year was to get up early in the mornings, an hour or two before the  kids woke up and life made it’s daily demands.

Set your Alarm

For the past two months I have consistently (for the most part :)) been setting my alarm and crawling out of bed long before anyone else is awake, to read. But I haven’t just been reading. It’s amazing how much you can accomplish when you have a couple of undivided hours to yourself!

I quickly fell into a routine that helped me to wake up well, energize, take care of myself, and plan for the day ahead. Overall  feeling better equipped to handle the demands and stresses that life inevitably throws my way.

If this stirs something inside of you, a desire for change, energy and wholeness, I encourage you to read on and invite you to start your own morning routine!

My Morning Routine

1. Get up early

We’ve already covered this one but it really is the most important. Take some time for yourself before life makes it’s demands. Starting your day off early and consistently has a huge impact on your state of mind throughout the day.

2. Wake up

Do something that actually helps you wake up! Wash your face, brush your teeth…

My favorite thing to do is apply some moistirizing JoJoba Oil to my hands and neck as well as a few drops of essential oils. Currently I’m using a Nature’s Remedy blend called “Energize” which contains Frankincense, Sweet Orange and Peppermint.

3. Warm up

While I’m applying my oils I spend a few minutes lightly massaging my hands and neck. This helps increase circulation and helps me become more self aware.

*Once I start reading (see below), I plug in my Thermafor, which is a fancy moist heating pad to really warm up my muscles and relex any tension built up overnight.

You can do this with a heated blanket, microwavable heat pack or even a towel soaked in warm water and rung out.

4. Move

The morning is a great time to stretch and move your body in preparation for the day. I like to stretch out my chest and neck and do a simple yoga routine to get the blood flowing!

5. Read (do something you love)

This comes back to my goal of reading 52 books a year. But choose something you love to do and spend some time on that. Maybe for you it’s writing, drawing, painting or playing music?

6. Put the Kettle On

One of my favourite things about the morning is drinking my coffee! I love the smell of fresh grinds brewing in my french press.

Whether it’s coffee, tea, fresh juice or a smoothie…treating yourself to something you love each morning can be motivating and energizing.

7.Fuel your Body

Start your day off with a heatlhy breakfast! Enjoy your first meal of the day, properly balanced in complex carbohydrates, protein and healthy fats to fuel your body.

8.Plan Ahead

Take some time in the morning to plan for your day ahead. Visualize the things you would like to accomplish and how you feel about them.

Make a list of what you plan to accomplish today (start small), washing the dishes, cleaning one room of your house might be enough to start with!

Since I have made this my morning routine I have felt much more positive throughout the day. Even though I am waking much earlier I seem to have more energy. For years I have suffered from chronic headaches, but now thanks to stretching each morning I rarely experience them!

There are so many benefits to establishing a consistent morning routine.

And again, this is simply a list of things I have incorporated into my morning routine…make it your own!
